ELECTIONS 2024
ELECTIONS 2024

Distribution of candidates by ethnic community

2024 compared to the national statistics of 1972.

The last census collecting information about the ethnic community of each citizen was made in 1972. Subsequent censuses did not ask this question. The best loser system in Mauritius requires that all candidates declare their ethnic community on nomination day. The following table compares the percentages of candidates for the 2024 elections with the data from the 1972 census.

Community Candidates % in 2024 % in 1972 census
Hindu 457 51.3% 51.8%
General Population 210 23.6% 28.7%
Muslim 207 23.2% 16.6%
Sino-Mauritian 17 1.9% 2.9%

Totals may not add up to 100% due to rounding.

Constituencies of Mauritius sorted by variation from the national statistics of 1972 in terms of ethnicity of candidates.

The variation is calculated by comparing the percentage of candidates for each community with the expected percentage according to the national statistics of 1972. A constituency with (approximately) the same ethnic distribution of candidates as the 1972 statistics will have a very low variation. On the other hand, a constituency which has a distribution of candidates very different from the 1972 statistics will show a large variation. Rodrigues is such an example of a large variation.
